Tips for Decorating a Bookcase

Through a series of random events, I found myself with 3 bookcases and I didn’t have the slightest idea of how to begin decorating them. I was accustomed to generating large piles of books on my bedroom floor and only made a new pile when the previous was about to topple over and present a safety hazard. But now that I have learned the magic of bookshelves, I am never going back.

Bookshelves are an easy and stylish way to decorate your space and can even give you a little extra storage. The easiest and simplest way to fill a bookcase is with, well books. But not everyone has enough books to fill this amount and space and for that reason, I hope you find these tips helpful. I am actually a big fan of the library and not feeling the need to own every book I read, which is why using these tips were extra helpful for me.

It’s the Plants for me

Do not sleep on the power of adding a few plants to really any space in your home. It adds a nice piece of visual interest to your space and often can be very inexpensive. What I really love about the plant above is first that it’s fake (low maintenance) and next that the base in wrapped in jute material that adds a bit of warmth to this bookcase as well.

I sometimes catch myself looking at how cute my plant is while on Zoom calls with this bookcase in my background. #sorrynotsorry

Add Books

This seems like a simple enough item to add to a bookcase, it IS a BOOkcase after-all. But there are so many ways to get creative with how you add in books. You can turn books so that only the pages show, this is a more uniform look. I’ve seen people arrange books by color and create a gradient effect.

You can also create more space with your books by choosing to stack some and have others lined up. Alternating these different ideas can help create visual interest in your bookcase.

Candles and Trickers and Storage- oh my!

If you really need to fill up your space, candles, and trinkets are the way to go. Add in a small photo frame or maybe a little figurine. I really love using baskets and also storing things in the lower level of my bookcase. You will need to measure the depth and length of your case to make sure that you find boxes that will fit in your space, but this is a great way to find extra space for your belongings in your home. I am a huge fan of using natural materials for boxes, this makes your storage look cozier.

I hope these tips were helpful! What are other ways you utilize your bookcase? Comment your ideas down below, I love hearing new suggestions!

Love always,
